I used to think that if the thought ran through your head it was cheating....not anymore. Having a close "friend", is OK. It may even spice things up. Just don't bring her home to share and keep it to yourself.
The question begs for a standard, and in most places I've lived in the world, the answer would be yes, the gender today doesn't represent a distinction! Have fun!
